Emily’s Wild Gift Project – Conservation Initiative Consulting – helped the Contulmo Landowners Network in the Nahuelbuta Coastal Range, Chile, form a cluster of private protected areas and, in the process, develop a replicable, community-based, private conservation model. CIC conducted a baseline biodiversity assessment of the properties and created conservation and management plans by merging current uses, environmental considerations, and the landowners’ vision for future conservation and sustainable development. The Contulmo results were published and distributed to community members, government agencies, universities and NGO’s and presented at the 2007 Latin American National Parks and Other Protected Areas Conference in Bariloche, Argentina. A step-by-step planning manual for rural landowners was also created. Emily is now working as a geographic information systems specialist for the World Wildlife Fund’s Southern Chile Program in Valdivia, Chile.
